EMDR Intensives

What are EMDR Intensives?

Just as EMDR is a very different approach to psychotherapy, the intensive is a very different approach to providing EMDR treatment.  Because of the “rewiring” and truly healing effect of EMDR, an intensive can work in ways that are not possible using standard talk-therapy techniques.  With EMDR processing, we can desensitize negative feelings and change the negative beliefs about self that have been encoded onto the memory in order to “rewire” the brain and truly heal the individual.  This means more material can be processed and healed much more quickly in an intensive session than is possible in traditional weekly therapy.

An intensive usually entails 3-6 hour sessions for 1-5 consecutive days.  Rather than dealing with things on a week to week basis you can often work through many issues intensively and fast track the healing and relief you seek as you look to move forward with your life. Please keep in mind it is called an intensive for a reason.  The work is certainly INTENSE, but so is the healing!  Intensives are not for everyone.  If you are interested in exploring the idea of an intensive please contact me to schedule a consultation and I will help you to decide if intensives are a good fit for you.  In some cases, intensives can be utilized to work on very specific parts of a clients history (I.e.preverbal trauma) and after the intensive the client returns to the care of their weekly therapist.  If you currently have a therapist please feel free to discuss this option with them and I am happy to discuss collaborative work.

FAQ’s

How might an EMDR Intensive help me?

-Process more information in a shorter amount of time.  Dedicate 1-5 days to focus on healing, growth and connection.

-Cost effective: intensives are highly concentrated and highly focused, sometimes requiring less time and overall cost to the client.

-No more weekly appointments: Stop scheduling your weeks around therapy sessions

-Make a lasting change.  Take care of your mind and body.

Intensive therapy is a financial investment in you and your future.  Rather than being on the weekly payment plan of traditional therapy treatment, you will be investing a larger amount of money up front (that in the long run will likely still be less money than ongoing weekly therapy).  Many people have to plan ahead and save before they can schedule an intensive.  Once the intensive is scheduled though, you will have a fixed cost to work with rather than an unknown ongoing weekly therapy.

How long do intensives take?

-Full day intensives take between 1-5 days.  Typically, sessions will begin around 9am and last until about 3pm, with several breaks in between (a total of 5 hours of therapy throughout the day) intensives are individualized different for various needs of the client

What does a typical Intensive day look like?

-Typically sessions will begin around 9am, with a lunch break around noon and ending around 3pm, though that schedule is entirely flexible to accommodate the work being pursued.  Depending on the nature of the processing, breaks will be taken as needed.  The amount of time we will be working each day will fluctuate depending on the work we are doing.  The nice part about intensives is the flexibility afforded to tailor the fir the work to what your system needs at the time.  A one-hour lunch break (sometimes longer if needed) will be taken each day.

How do I schedule?

First schedule a 15 min, free phone consultation. Consultations are NOT therapy- they are an exploration to see if an intensive is a good fit for you.

How do I prepare for an Intensive?

I suggest treating the days surrounding intensive sessions like a personal retreat.  This is a time for clients to really focus on healing themselves.  Schedule activities you enjoy around your sessions such as massage, yoga, and hiking.

Where do Intensive take place?

All EMDR intensives are conducted virtually, allowing you to engage in the healing process from the comfort and privacy of your own home. To ensure the most effective and uninterrupted experience, I kindly ask that you set up a quiet, distraction-free space with a reliable internet connection. This ensures that we can fully immerse in the work without any disruptions.
